European wolf

This August 2006 photo shows Chaussette, a 17-year-old European wolf isolated from the rest of the Amneville, France, zoo in a closed area where old animals can end their lives quietly, away from the noise and the effervescence of the visitors. The European wolf remains on the 'strictly protected' species list of a key wildlife convention, after signatories rejected a Swiss proposal to declassify the animal during a meeting in the eastern French city of Strasbourg.(AFP/File/Jean-Christophe Verhaegen)
